The latest cameo in Secret Invasion reveals yet another Black Widow connection.

With only one episode remaining, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury is pulling out all the stops. He intends to bring down Skrull commander Gravik, seeing that the threat is about to come full circle. Fury must exterminate the alien terrorists no matter what since he unintentionally triggered this chain of events when he failed to provide them a home. Fury, sadly, lost buddies along the road. Maria Hill and Talos have both been slain, demonstrating Gravik’s team’s ruthlessness. Fortunately, Fury receives assistance in the penultimate episode. It takes the shape of Rick Mason, who was last seen in Black Widow. This cameo also serves as a reminder to viewers that Fury still has shady pals lurking in the shadows.

Rick Mason (O-T Fagbenle) is recognised as the ultimate black market smuggler in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He featured in Black Widow 2021, assisting Natasha in obtaining the necessary equipment to take down the Red Room. In the end, he’d give a Quinjet and forged paperwork for her to reach Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, kicking off Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.Natasha had freed him from a Cambodian prison once she began working for S.H.I.E.L.D. They’d bond and even romance a little over time, with Black Widow turning to him when she needed to go dark to stop Dreykov alias Taskmaster and other deadly Widows. The MCU, on the other hand, radically altered his function from the comics. James Hudnall and John Ridgway founded Mason in 1989. He was a special operations operative who collaborated with Fury. He essentially cut a James Bond aura to compensate for his father’s (the Tinkerer) dirty history developing weaponry. As such, it should come as no surprise that he assists Fury in his hour of need, demonstrating that super-spies can always rely on one another.

Mason’s appearance is the second hint to Black Widow, following Priscilla’s assistance with the Red Room. When Fury finds a ride to Finland, Mason arrives. He’s the one who buys Fury the private plane, but Fury jokes that Mason should have bought him a Helicarrier instead. It alludes to Mason, as a fixer, obtaining Natasha a high-tech, powered aircraft. Notably, Mason mentions in Captain America: The Winter Soldier that such airships were deactivated after Hydra co-opted them under Fury’s nose. He laughs that they’re washed up, like Fury. It’s a cheap shot, but it’s typical of Fury’s style. Mason brings Fury into the country to visit his hidden hideaway in a brief but essential cameo. He pulls out the Harvest (a vial of the Avengers’ DNA) and puts on his jacket and eye patch. Mason does not participate in the fight, but he does create the path for Fury to reclaim his original appearance and identity. As a consequence, Secret Invasion Episode 5 sets up Fury for one final fight with Gravik, leaving fans to wonder when Mason will be seen again. Perhaps he’ll collaborate with Yelena Belova in Thunderbolts and provide information on Natasha. Perhaps his relationship with Fury will be explored further in another MCU franchise. Secret Invasion, through Mason, demonstrates that the Skrulls did not account for several factors.
