The Marvels had mostly positive reviews from critics just before its release, despite doubts about its plot and other urgent concerns brought up in the weeks leading up to its much-anticipated theatrical debut. Ahead of its global release on November 10, a number of insiders and critics from reputable media have offered their opinions on the Nia DaCosta-directed Captain Marvel sequel. A critic named Kristen Maldonad said of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, “The Marvels is the most fun I’ve had watching a superhero movie in a while!” Most people have called the film a “fun” watch. It’s witty, action-packed, and brimming with female strength. Kamala was exceptional and shocked me in a lot of ways. The squad displayed excellent balance while delivering devastating bombs that would completely alter everything.” Molly Freeman of Screen Rant, on the other hand, called it a “completely fantastic” and a portrayal of “everything Marvel does best.”

The majority of the criticism directed at The Marvels, however, is directed towards the movie’s plot, in which Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel trades abilities with Teyonah Parris’s Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel to explore a wormhole connected to the Kree. While praising the film for surpassing his modest expectations, critic Nate Richard remarked that “the story is a huge mess with an underwhelming finale and an underutilised villain.” Furthermore, Kristina Lopez of The Wrap stated, “The Marvels has serious script issues to be sure.” It’s “so charming and colourful and fun, it’s easy to overlook,” according to Lopez. The Marvels received positive reviews for its action and comedy, but a cursory look at Rotten Tomatoes indicates that the film still needs more work before it can be considered worth the money. As at the time of writing, the Phase Five MCU endeavour has a mediocre 52% critical rating on the review aggregator website.

The Marvels, which also stars Zawe Ashton (Dar-Benn), Park Seo-Joon (Prince Yan), and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), has had its fair share of upheaval as it concludes the MCU’s wild 2023. Reports of Larson’s dissatisfaction with playing Captain Marvel recently surfaced, along with production delays and unimpressive test screenings for the fall blockbuster. The lack of anticipation for The Marvels’ presales is also worrisome for Marvel, as box office estimates place the film’s opening weekend earnings between $50 million and $80 million. This is a long cry from Captain Marvel, which was a critical and economic success, grossing over $1.13 billion globally.
