Secret Invasion’s first episode of the series is a fast-moving thriller that explores spycraft in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, makes a comeback to Earth to aid his comrades in fending off a group of aggressive Skrulls who want to conquer the planet. Maria Hill, a beloved MCU human hero played by Cobie Smulders, is slain by a Skrull donning Nick Fury’s face when Fury is at war. In tales adapted from comic books, a character’s demise does not always spell their demise. Fans of Marvel will be saddened if Maria Hill really is no longer with us.
Maria Hill made her film debut in Avengers as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who collaborated closely with Fury and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). Hill took over as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ preferred human companion after the death of the latter character. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, she was on the front lines when S.H.I.E.L.D. was destroyed, and in Age of Ultron, she found a new job in Avengers Tower. In the same year, she also made an appearance on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., assisting the resurrected Coulson in repairing the helicarrier that rescues the citizens of Sokovia. Even when the relationship to the film’s universe is less tenuous, Smulders’ Hill still makes an appearance to lend some Marvel cred, as she did in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. This demonstrates that the show is still striving to stay up with the wider MCU. Last but not least, Cobie Smulders isn’t through with Secret Invasion just because Maria Hill could be dead.
Maria Hill lacks any superhuman abilities. She resembles Black Widow in many ways, excluding the cool shock bracelets and the traumatic Red Room experience. She constantly stands ready to battle and is useful in conflicts. She didn’t think twice to fight back when Hawkeye and other Loki-mind-controlled individuals attacked the helicarrier’s bridge in Avengers. She also made more of a difference in the battle than either Bruce Banner or Widow did when Ultron initially attacked the Avengers. She was skilled at operating their business, unlike the rest of the staff. She possessed the managerial expertise and tactical ability to keep the Avengers productive.
Maria Hill’s past is unknown, although it is safe to assume that she has been fighting for a lot longer than any of the Avengers. She spent her whole career with S.H.I.E.L.D. before it was disbanded. The Avengers’ headquarters were destroyed, Iron Man was dead, and the remaining heroes were dispersed between Avengers: Endgame and Secret Invasion. Hill is now employed by S.A.B.E.R., S.W.O.R.D., or any other intelligence agency that employs spies like her. Additionally, she has been competing longer than Fury, at least since Blip.
The loss of Hill is probably intended to further isolate Fury, but Smulders’ portrayal in the episode makes that truth much more painful. One of the episode’s best moments is when she informs Fury that he has lost a step. Smulders is able to convey that Hill remains devoted to her buddy and role model. She is aware that this is not a game, though. Fury’s mental instability might have disastrous effects. When the attack occurs, she is shot to death by Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Gravik donning Fury’s visage, proving she was correct. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Maria Hill is just as much of an original Avenger as anybody else in the movie’s skin-tight outfit.
Cobie Smulders’ role as “Aunt” Robin on How I Met Your Mother was her most well-known role at the time the MCU’s core group came together. Her inclusion in Avengers was practically an Easter egg since the character debuted in the comics in 2005. Hill was mostly employed by writer and filmmaker Joss Whedon to give exposition. She wasn’t a completely developed character when she first appeared, but throughout the course of her brief cameos on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and in the Avengers sequels, that changed. Maria was given gravitas, charm, and passion by Smulders. Ironically, the Secret Invasion series opener could be the MCU’s finest Maria Hill tale. She has outperformed her mentor and fellow employee. Perhaps everyone would have survived if she had been in charge rather than Fury.
Smulders could reappear because the series’ main adversaries have the ability to change their appearance. She may be impersonated by a Skrull to provoke Fury or mislead his friends. Another possibility is that some sci-fi wizardry can bring Hill back to life, keeping Smulders as one of Marvel’s top supporting actors. She leaves behind a legacy that is greater than the extent of her involvement in each episode, even if Secret Invasion is her final appearance in the MCU. She is one of the MCU’s least used characters despite making 11 appearances in films and television. In reality, Secret Invasion would still be a wonderful series to watch with Hill in the driver’s seat if Fury had simply accepted her advise and gone home.
