The first Hollywood studio event picture of 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, kicked off its American box office run with a robust $17.5 million on Thursday previews, much outpacing the previous two movies. The shows started at 3 p.m. The Marvel Studios sequel is expected to have one of the highest Presidents Day box office performances with a projected $110 million total over the course of the four-day period (Friday through Monday). Without accounting for inflation, Black Panther continues to retain the record with $242.2 million, followed by Deadpool ($152.2 million) and Fifty Shades of Grey ($93 million).

In general, Quantumania’s preview revenue is comparable to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which opened to $147 million over the May 5-7 weekend in 2017. Since certain movies may be more front loaded than others, preview grosses aren’t necessarily indicative of how a movie will do. A three-day gross of $95 million is included in the $110 million prediction for Quantumania. It will be made available in China on Friday.

Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, and director Peyton Reed are all back again for Ant-Man 3. Bill Murray, Katy O’Brian, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jonathan Majors, Kathryn Newton, William Jackson Harper, James Cutler, and David Dastmalchian are also included in the cast. The movie now has a 48 percent reviewers approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the second-worst rating of any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind Enternals (47 percent), and significantly lower than the Tomatometer ratings for Ant-Man (2012) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2015). (87 percent). In general, superhero entertainment can be more resilient to negative reviews than other genres.

The first Ant-Man had the lowest domestic opening of any MCU film with $57.2 million and went on to gross $519.3 million worldwide. Three years later, Ant-Man and the Wasp, the sequel, opened to $75.8 million in North America before reaching its global peak of $622.7 million. The two movies each made $6 million and $12 million from preview sales. Following the success of Avatar: The Way of Water and, more recently, a 3D remastered edition of Titanic, Ant-Man 3 is making a significant 3D push. Quantumania’s increase in price due to the format might reach the mid- to high digits.

By Friday, the movie will be showing in 2,500 3D cinemas and about 4,300 venues in the United States and Canada.
