Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse from Sony Pictures has nearly doubled the first weekend box office of the first Spider-Verse movie. Variety reports that the US box office debut of Across the Spider-Verse was $120.5 million, making it the third-highest start for any prior Spider-Man movie and the second-biggest opening weekend of 2023, behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146 million). Comparatively, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from 2018 began with $35.5 million and concluded with $190 million domestically and $384 million internationally.

These Across the Spider-Verse box office results come following rumours that the sequel will at least double the previous movie’s opening weekend. Initially, some studios expected Across the Spider-Verse to take in upwards of $90 million on its debut weekend, while others estimated about $80 million. The $100 million sequel to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man movie from 2018 has already made money in its first weekend.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse boasts a star-studded cast of Spider-People, including Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, Karani Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar/Spider-Man India and Daniel Kaluuya as Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk. The ensemble was further expanded with the addition of Andy Samberg and Amandla Stenberg, who played Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider and Spider-Byte, respectively.

Although producer Chris Miller said that “amidst the universe-hopping, there are 240 unique characters… but they’re mostly minor or background characters,” the exact number of Spider-Man variants the animated adventure will contain remained unknown before the film’s debut. It was subsequently revealed that the film, including those recognisable characters, has just under 100 total recognised characters.

Justin Thompson, the co-director, stated, “But I believe it was around 280 the last time I looked in.” Just to be clear, that doesn’t always mean particular, distinctive characters that you could recognise; it might also refer to variances. However, if you’re just referring to identified characters, there are probably around 95. Regarding the scope of the movie, Across the Spider-Verse will also have six distinct animation philosophies for every realm. Other Spider-Variants have also been revealed in the film’s promotional materials, including Doppelganger, Otto Octavius/Superior Spider-Man, Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman, Mary Jane Watson-Parker/Spinneret, and Anna-May Parker/Spiderling, among others.
