The original X-Men from Marvel Comics learn about the beautiful but sad existence their strongest telepath may have lived. The First X-Men The title characters, written by Christos Gauge, illustrator Greg Land, inker Jay Leisten, and colorist Frank D’Armata, square up against the frightening but mostly non-lethal evil pair, Plantman and the Eel. The youthful mutants are transported via fiery portals to an entirely different location and time before they can destroy their enemies. What they do see right away is the face of an adult Jean Grey who is linked to the Phoenix Force and is dressed in her famous outfit, but this time it is royal purple to represent the complete harmony and understanding that exists between them.
Her timeline, as explained by this other Phoenix, was one in which the Phoenix Force requested and obtained Jean Grey’s explicit approval prior to forging their link. Because of this, none of the lies or terrible failures that eventually resulted in the main Marvel Universe’s “Dark Phoenix Saga” were ever a part of their experiences. By epic acts of violence, these other forms of the Phoenix Force and Jean Grey were able to bring peace and harmony to their planet, saving each other’s legacies for decades to come. In an attempt to dissuade the future iteration of their own Jean Grey from waging a multiversal war as the Dark Phoenix, the united Phoenix has now sought out the younger members of another interdimensional team of X-Men. The most recent issue of Jean Grey (written by Louise Simonson, Bernard Chang, Marcelo Maiolo, Jay Bown, and VC’s Ariana Maher) featured the Phoenix and Jean Grey from the main Marvel Universe in the lead roles. This issue culminated in Jean confronting multiple incarnations of herself from different eras inside the White Hot Room. All of this happened as a result of Jean dying in the most recent Hellfire Gala attack by Orchis. Though it appeared at the time that Jean would never be able to return because of Orchis’ successful destruction of the Krakoan Resurrection Protocols, Jean has once again been empowered by the Phoenix Force to fight back against the oppressors of mutantkind’s Resurrection.
