Kevin Wright, the co-executive producer of Loki, stated that they had a “what if?” moment in the writers’ room and thought of revealing Loki as He Who Remains rather than having Kang introduce him. Wright discussed the Disney+ series in great detail during an interview, including long-term intentions for Loki’s plot arc. After being a despised antagonist in Thor, the character has made a smooth transition to become the MCU’s unconventional anti-hero. It’s even debatable if the events of Loki Season 1 turned him into an unexpected hero, though Wright was quick to clarify that they made every effort to avoid giving viewers the appearance of this. Although it’s clear that Loki has always been a troubled figure in the MCU, the series gave him more depth and made him relevant to the Multiverse’s ultimate destiny. Wright acknowledges that during one of the major story shocks of the season, they even thought about exposing Loki as He Who Remains.
All options are on the table in the writers’ room, Wright stated, and discussions have taken place about the possibility that Loki is He Who Remains. He also gave an explanation for why they swiftly abandoned the concept, as it would drastically reduce the size of the universe they were attempting to construct. Tom Hiddleston added that while there is something amusing about that and fascinating parts to it, it makes the universe feel tiny, so those talks didn’t go very far. In fact, I don’t think it ever reached him. Thus, He Who Remains, or some variant of Kang, was always going to be the one. Wright underlined that they were dedicated to this being the show’s storyline from the start and that Kang was always intended to be He Who Remains in Loki. According to him, the concept for He Who Remains—who isn’t Kang in the comics—was always there during production, but for us, it was always going to be a different take on him. When Kang first appeared in Loki Season 1, it was a bold move from the books, where He Who Remains is portrayed as Immortus, a villain who is only a reincarnation of Kang the Conqueror in the future. Wright makes a suggestion that Loki’s character journey is not yet finished. “I think there are a lot more stories to be told about Loki, Sylvie, and the TVA,” he stated. “We’re making things up. However, if there’s a way to do it naturally, we’d love to keep exploring these people and this universe.”
