One week after its premiere, Captain America: Brave New World’s audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes surpasses that of The Marvels, the greatest box office failure in the MCU. The fourth Captain America film in the MCU and the first without Chris Evans’s retiring Steve Rogers is Captain America: Brave New World. Compared to previous Multiverse Saga releases, Captain America: Brave New World has a far higher chance of becoming a financial success due to its $180 million budget. But the critical acclaim of Steve Rogers’ three solo flicks is outpacing that of Sam Wilson’s first MCU lead. The Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter for Captain America: Brave New World reached 80% on February 20, 2025, matching The Marvels’ audience score. The Marvels and Captain America: Brave New World both did poorly at the box office, but reviews from viewers painted a different image. The Marvel presently has a 62% Tomatometer, compared to 49% for Captain America: Brave New World.
Despite having the identical audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Captain America: Brave New World made $192 million over its three-day opening weekend, while The Marvels made a total of $206 million worldwide. In the meanwhile, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s $227 million first weekend gross surpasses both films by a considerable margin, and its $476 million may still be less than the entire global box office receipts of Captain America: Brave New World. Not distant from the previous two movies, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s Tomatometer is at 46% and its Popcornmeter is still at 81%. Captain America: Brave New World has a better Popcornmeter than several other MCU films, such as The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Love and Thunder, Iron Man 2, and Ant-Man and the Wasp, while having the third-lowest Tomatometer score in the MCU. Strangely, Deadpool & Wolverine, with a 92% Popcornmeter rating, is just 1% lower than Captain Marvel, with a 45% audience rating (78% vs. 79%, respectively). In summary, regardless of box office performance, ratings can be quite disparate. Marvel films can elicit identical responses from critics and viewers, but their box office performance might fluctuate significantly depending on a wide range of circumstances, such as release dates, delays, and fans who choose not to express their opinions online. No one figure can fully capture the quality and popularity of an MCU episode, even while it is true that certain projects are more successful than others overall. It is impossible to characterize Captain America: Brave New World as a failure, even though the reviews and audience responses are not quite as strong as those of earlier Captain America films.
