The next Marvel Cinematic Universe film Thunderbolts is not being viewed as a Black Widow sequel, according to director Jake Schreier. A Marvel Studios executive claimed earlier this year that Thunderbolts would serve as the follow-up to the Scarlett Johansson–starring 2021 film because three Black Widow characters—Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, Red Guardian, played by David Harbour, and Taskmaster, played by Olga Kurylenko—were present. With Schreier explicitly stating that Thunderbolts wasn’t designed as a Black Widow sequel, it’s possible that this isn’t the case after all. The next superhero team-up picture will be a “complete story” on its own, the director said in an interview. I wouldn’t consider this to be a sequel at all, and neither do we discuss it that way nor have we ever really kind of treated it that way while working on it, according to Schreier. We’re going to go into a tale about a cast of individuals who can relate to one another in particular ways or have experienced particular things. The Paper Towns director also emphasised that Black Widow is not strictly necessary for viewers to grasp the Thunderbolts’ plot. But I believe we’re all talking about doing a movie, he said. “Obviously, Florence has proven how captivating she could be in the MCU, and I think it’s great to have that as a reference point.” “You are welcome to attend, and if you have seen that material, fantastic. If you haven’t, there will still be a whole tale being told in the film that stands alone while still contributing to the larger plot.

The Marvel Comics team of antiheroes and villains with the same name, which was founded in 1997 by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley, will serve as the inspiration for Thunderbolts. The movie also stars Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in addition to Pugh, Harbour, and Kurylenko. Harrison Ford, Ayo Edebiri, and Steven Yeun, who are newbies to the franchise, will also be joining them. The actor from Indiana Jones, who will first appear in Captain America: Brave New World, will take over for the late William Hurt in the role of Thaddeus Ross. In a previous interview, Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige hinted to Bucky Barnes’ significant new function in the MCU as the de facto Thunderbolts commander. The fact that they are hardly heroes is what’s entertaining about the movie, and I kind of expressed this at D23, according to Feige. No one among them would see himself as a hero. That’s essentially all you need to know when Bucky Barnes serves as your de facto commander. That is trickle-down effect. Yeun may also play the movie’s major enemy, who is said to be the all-powerful Sentry, according to recent sources.
