The original and adapted picture screenplays that featured multiple Oscar nominees as well as writings that benefited from guild eligibility have been nominated by the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) and West (WGAW), respectively. Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Fabelmans, and T.R. were three of the five original screenplay candidates for the Oscars that also received WGA recognition. The Menu and Nope are qualified since The Banshees of Inisherin and Triangle of Sadness did not meet the WGA’s rigorous criteria for affiliation and script submission. Glass Onion, Top Gun: Maverick, Women Talking, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and She Said all received WGA nominations for best adapted screenplay, beating out All Quiet on the Western Front and Living.
In order to be eligible for a Writers Guild Award, a feature film must have been written under the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA) or a legitimate collective bargaining agreement with the Writers Guild of Canada, the Writers Guild of Great Britain, the Writers Guild of Ireland, the Writers Guild of South Africa, the New Zealand Writers Guild, or the Film Writers Association. The Writers Guild Awards must have been submitted for consideration, and they must be for theatrical scripts created under the authority of the WGA or an affiliated Guild.
In order to be eligible for a Writers Guild Award, a documentary had to have an onscreen writing credit and be shown in a theatre in Los Angeles or New York for one week between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022. The WGA or a Guild affiliate must have had control over the production of the theatrical documentary in order for it to be considered for an award. On Sunday, March 5, 2023, there will be parallel ceremonies for the 75th Writers Guild Awards at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles and the Edison Ballroom in New York.
