With its new Disney+ series, Secret Invasion, Marvel is exploring darker ground. A key MCU character seemed to be murdered off in the inaugural episode of the new series, which centres on Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in his conflict with a rebellious Skrull group. Maria Hill, a character played by Cobie Smulders, eventually took the plunge in “Resurrection” after initially appearing with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. in The Avengers. Hill is shot by Gravik after Fury, Hill, and their Skrull ally Talos fail in their effort to stop an attack by Gravik’s renegade Skrulls. Gravik poses as Fury to deceive Hill into believing she is safe. The MCU squandered Maria Hill, who never really had an opportunity to flourish as a character, according to many fans, who criticised Hill’s death as an example of fridging. Although this early demise shows that no one is safe in Secret Invasion, Talos should have been the series’ first victim to have a considerably bigger effect on the plot and the viewership.
Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, a Skrull commander who was first featured in Captain Marvel, has been Nick Fury’s friend and ally for a very long time. When Talos makes a comeback in Secret Invasion, his authority is on the decline as Gravik’s rebel faction gains power, and Talos must deal with the reality that his daughter, G’iah, has joined Gravik. Talos is one of the few allies the human protagonists in the story have left among the Skrulls as they face an increasing danger from Gravik’s rebels. He could also be G’iah’s sole chance for salvation. Because of these factors, eliminating him would have been a far more effective move for Secret Invasion.
Without Talos as an ally, the human governments and security services drawn into the struggle with Gravik may be more likely to see the Skrull race as a whole as a danger, raising tensions in the developing conflict. The loss of Talos could have had a more severe effect on Fury. Fury confessed he only came back to Earth after a protracted hiatus because he thought he owed it to Talos, despite the fact that he is close to Maria Hill and her passing will undoubtedly trouble him morally. Talos’s subsequent death in battle with him would have caused Fury to doubt his goal and given further credence to his supporters’ claims that he isn’t prepared for the conflict he is currently facing.
The goal of Talos’ endeavour to mend his damaged connection with his daughter G’iah as a result of Gravik’s radicalism is established in the first episode of Secret Invasion. In the end, it appears that G’iah betrayed Maria Hill after offering to work as a double agent for her father within Gravik’s ranks. G’iah could have experienced trauma had her actions resulted in Talos’ death rather than Maria Hill’s. By raising the dilemma of whether her father’s passing would result in atonement or push her even further into Gravik’s destructive worldview, losing him as a result of her crimes would have elevated her tale and expanded Talos’ involvement in it. Of course, just because Maria Hill was the first victim of Secret Invasion doesn’t mean Talos is secure. Later in the series, the Skrull may be eliminated, but his demise might no longer be as shocking. Talos’ troubled connection with his daughter and the significance of the mission that caused him to summon Fury from S.A.B.E.R. may have improved in the series if the series’ first victim had been something genuinely surprising and significant. But by hastily eliminating Maria Hill in Episode 1, Secret Invasion may have weakened her character and jeopardised a more significant character death.
