Even if X-Men ’97 is going retro, it doesn’t seem like the years have gone. In an interview that followed the unveiling of the much awaited teaser for X-Men: The Animated Series 2, showrunner Beau DeMayo discussed what fans may anticipate from the iconic X-Men, including how their costumes tie into the team’s upcoming journey. Actually, every design decision we make points towards the narratives we’re working on. Nothing is random,” he said, referring to these designs as a partial homage to Pryde of the X-Men, the show’s precursor. “Throw the X-Men back to a time where they’re thinking about: What part of this do I want to keep?,” DeMayo continued, was the second motivation. Was life back then really easier, or were we simply more innocent?”

The X-Men ’97 teaser, which begins with footage from the 90s cartoon’s conclusion before switching to the new show’s modernised visual style and action sequences, demonstrates this attempt to bridge the gaps between periods. It ends with a shocking twist, as Magneto informs the X-Men that Charles Xavier bequeathed everything to his friend-turned-foe in his Will, all while hinting at familiar character relationships. DeMayo clarified, “When I first came to this, I was thinking about what the world of the ’90s was like, even issues of social acceptance and what does it mean to be different? ” in reference to how this will tie into the X-Men’s struggle against Mutant discrimination. Compared to now, it was a lot more straightforward. For years, the X-Men encouraged mankind to embrace the future and go forward as a group. What occurs when they are confronted with an unexpected future? When you believe that the future is moving away from you, how does it feel to be on the other side?”

X-Men: The Animated Series, which aired on Fox Kids from 1992 to 1997, is recognised as one of the greatest superhero cartoons ever made. After it was cancelled, two further X-Men cartoons were made in the 2000s: X-Men: Evolution and Wolverine and the X-Men. In 2011, an anime series based on the X-Men and Wolverine was also published. While several performers from X-Men ’97 have been replaced, seasoned cast members from X-Men: The Animated Series, such as Cal Dodd, George Buza, and Lenore Zann, will return to their famous roles from the 90s ensemble. Actor Theo James is reportedly joining the cast as an unidentified “fan-favorite character,” according to DeMayo. Marvel has released the trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine, which stars Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds in their respective roles. It was released with the teaser for X-Men ’97. Other noteworthy live-action X-Men cameos in recent motion pictures were Beast in the mid-credit scene of The Marvels and Xavier played by Kelsey Grammer and Patrick Stewart in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
