The X-Men will return for both Deadpool 3 and Secret Wars.

After Deadpool 3, will Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine be back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? Both Jackman and the Merc with a Mouth himself, Ryan Reynolds, have teased how Wolverine will be included into the movie since Wolverine’s formal introduction into the MCU was confirmed last year. Some people think Jackman’s Wolverine will continue to feature in films after Deadpool 3 since the introduction of X-Men characters, particularly Wolverine, into the MCU has been eagerly anticipated and long-hyped.

Now that Jackman has addressed Wolverine’s MCU future, his response is the least specific he has yet provided. Jackman says he “imagine[s] every movie is a one and done” in response to Empire Magazine’s inquiry about his plans for following Deadpool 3. At the same time, he denied suggestions Taron Egerton will succeed Jackman as Wolverine, indicating he isn’t yet prepared to consider succession. See here for Jackman’s entire statement:

“I imagine every movie is a one and done. Taron is one of the most talented actors out there. And you can see his range is incredible. But he’s just got to cool his heels a little bit.”

While Jackman did not express a commitment to more MCU engagement in this statement, he also does not rule it out. Deadpool 3 is not a “one and done” just because you think it is; in fact, Logan was supposed to be the end of Wolverine. Even though the character’s valiant final battle resulted in his demise, the MCU is still finding a way to bring Jackman back. In light of this, it does not seem improbable that the trend may continue after Deadpool 3 and bring Wolverine back permanently.

Due to the MCU’s extensive production schedule, Jackman would have plenty of opportunities to return to the series. The MCU will release four more films following Deadpool 3 in November 2024: Blade 2024, Marvel’s Fantastic Four, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars appear the most plausible movies for a future Wolverine comeback because they are the most distantly related and feature the fewest storyline elements thus far. Since the Avengers are regrouping in Phase 5, it is possible that they will take Jackman’s Wolverine with them.

However, given the MCU, it is also very likely that Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine or Jackman himself will make an appearance in one of these upcoming MCU movies. The MCU is not opposed to little cameos by important characters or big stars in supporting parts. In Avengers: Endgame, Natalie Portman played Jane Foster for around two minutes. Jackman’s cameo appearance in Deadpool 3 might not be as interesting or comprehensive, but it may still suggest that Wolverine would once more come out of retirement.
