The X-Men’s battle to stop the Fall of X brings Magik and Kitty Pryde back together

Part of the X-Men’s attack on Earth, X-Men is written by Gerry Duggan, illustrated by artist/colorist Phil Noto, and lettered by Clayton Cowles. The fact that Orchis changed the unique medication that the X-Men had supplied to the rest of the world—the foundation of the X-Men’s mutant country, Krakoa—is one of the main issues facing the X-Men during the Fall of X. Charles Xavier consented to exile the mutants to Mars when faced with the decision of whether to send all of mutantkind into exile or witness millions of humans being slain by Orchis, who could now kill any human who had ever used the mutant medication, which was essentially all of mankind. However, he was taken aback when the mutants all disappeared, as if they had been transported rather than just killed (it turned out that the mutants had simply been relocated into various locations). A few mutants—those who had been taught to defy Xavier’s orders—escaped and were fighting Orchis from below ground while concealing their mutant prowess. Orchis no longer had mankind kept captive when Synch of the X-Men successfully neutralised the Orchis trigger in the medication (at a horrifying personal cost). As a result, the X-Men are now free to openly assault Orchis.

Magik, who was part of a group of mutants that were imprisoned in the Asgardian realm’s periphery (as detailed in the miniseries Realm of X), has returned and is seeking retribution against Orchis. Since her departure, Kate Pryde has accepted her darker side, adopted the name Shadowkat, and used the tools of the evil martial arts master Ogun—whose mental abilities were the source of Pryde’s ninja abilities forty years prior in the Kitty Pryde and Wolverine miniseries—to murder as many Orchis agents as she can find. The teaser pages show Magik reuniting with the X-Men to launch an assault on Orchis. Emma Frost, who is using her telepathy to coordinate the strikes, is taken aback to learn that Magik survived the Hellfire Gala Orchis attack, which appeared to have wiped off the majority of Earth’s mutant population. But as a part of Orchis’ attack on the X-Men, she managed to remove the X-Men’s teleporters from the game, making it impossible for them to free the X-Men from Orchis. As a result, Magik was infected with a technology that stops her from using her teleportation powers, and as we can see, this has completely altered the way she fights. She has become so insane that she is killing Orchis operatives with weapons.
