It’s possible that Daredevil: Born Again in the MCU may never be able to match the violent intensity of a scene that startled viewers in the original Netflix series. The goal of Marvel’s much awaited relaunch, Daredevil: Born Again, is to develop Daredevil’s tale in a different setting while reintroducing Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock in the MCU chronology. The Netflix Marvel shows, especially Daredevil, were renowned for a degree of graphic brutality and sophisticated storytelling that was unmatched in the Marvel canon, so there are higher expectations for this new series. Marvel’s original Netflix series, such as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and, of course, Daredevil, all featured mature themes and extreme violence, and their tones were darker and gritty than those of other Marvel productions. One of the highlights was the Daredevil series, which felt unrivaled in its rawness. Both in terms of the plot and its readiness to maintain the same harsh, merciless tone that made the first series so iconic, Daredevil: Born Again has a lot to live up to.
The original Daredevil series reached new levels of graphic intensity and solidified its adult tone with a really startling and gruesome sequence in season 1, episode 3. John Healy, a hitman that Daredevil has arrested and interrogated for information on Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, is the main focus of the scene. Healy betrays Fisk to Daredevil after a great deal of psychological and physical coercion, knowing that this betrayal would have dire repercussions. The surprise that follows is quite unsettling: Healy decides to make a horrifying escape rather than face Kingpin’s fury. Healy throws himself headfirst onto a metal spike in one of the series’ most gory and shocking scenes, impaling his skull and instantly killing himself. Although this incident was unexpected, it also demonstrated the harsh reality of Daredevil’s world. Even the most seasoned criminals in Daredevil’s realm are so terrified of Fisk that they choose to end their own lives rather than suffer his wrath. With vivid images and a startling suddenness, the scenario was depicted without hesitation. Daredevil is one of the most adult and violent characters in the Marvel world, and this early act of extreme violence established the tone for the remainder of the series.
The gradual, tense build-up to Kingpin and Daredevil’s encounter was one of the most captivating elements of the first Daredevil series. Fisk was progressively presented over the first season, with glimpses of his authority over Hell’s Kitchen and an increasing feeling of fear of his power and cruelty. At first, he was a mysterious and enigmatic figure, a strong presence that let the tension organically develop. It felt deserved when Daredevil and Kingpin eventually squared up, marking the end of a masterfully written suspenseful narrative. Because Fisk’s reappearance is already somewhat established in the MCU, particularly in Hawkeye and Echo, the build-up in Daredevil: Born Again will be quite different. Fisk’s aspirations to run for mayor were really made evident by Echo’s conclusion, which made it obvious where his goals are. However, Born Again will need to put in more effort to maintain the same level of suspense that was essential to the previous series because the two are already acquainted and new plotlines center on Fisk’s political ambitions. It could be difficult for the new series to create the same level of tension in the build-up between Daredevil and his worst enemy without this expectation. The audience was on edge with every encounter since the original program took its time setting up the stakes and the threat that Fisk posed. It will be challenging to recreate the unadulterated terror that the first series so expertly fostered, but Daredevil: Born Again could need to adopt a new strategy, highlighting Fisk’s political influence and the fallout from his corruption.
