The directors of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse provide an update on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse as well as an insight into their collaboration and creative process. The directorial team of Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson discussed how they approached leading the movie and allocating the burden of a production of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s calibre in an interview conducted during the 2024 Astra Film Awards. Thompson detailed the process that started in 2022 during pre-production and involved several meetings on a variety of screens. Over time, the filmmakers became close friends and had a strong professional grasp of each other’s preferences and artistic decisions.
“When production started, we had already forged a bond because we had spent the first year or year and a half of our lives together, going to meetings, looking at screens, and discussing the same topics as we prepped everything. According to the explanation in the film, “We all became friends and understood each other’s tastes.” Thompson continued by stating that the three directors were from various backgrounds and mediums. Previously, Joaquim Dos Santos contributed to animated TV series including Justice League Unlimited and Avatar: The Last Airbender as an animator and storyboard artist. Playwright, screenwriter, and director Kemp Powers co-directed the Disney Pixar animated picture Soul and is a nominee for an Academy Award. The production designer for both Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was Justin K. Thompson.
The highly anticipated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has an update, which the filmmakers went to discuss with Dos Santos. They said, “We’re in production, we’re working on it, and we’ll see what happens.” It is progressing. With Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which was written and directed by Phil Lord (The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street) and Rodney Rothman, the Spider-Verse franchise made its debut in 2018. The film’s inventive animation and unique visual style, which drew inspiration from comic books, won praise from critics. The plot of the movie centres on Shameik Moore’s character Miles Morales, who transforms into the new Spider-Man and teams up with Spider-People from other parallel universes to defend his own from Kingpin.
