The upcoming Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie appears to have undergone creative changes, drawing comparisons to DC’s Suicide Squad. Reports suggest that earlier scripts involved the Thunderbolts crew going on a mission that was essentially a suicide mission, echoing the premise of the Suicide Squad films where characters had explosive devices implanted in their necks. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Joanna Calo is working on the script, but it remains unclear if the suicide mission plot device will be retained in the final version. The Thunderbolts roster includes characters like Yelena Belova, the Winter Soldier, U.S. Agent, Red Guardian, Ghost, and Taskmaster.
The film will bring together a star-studded cast, including Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross will be portrayed as the President of the United States in the movie. Notably, Steven Yeun, initially cast as Sentry, had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts following writers’ and actors’ strikes. The events of Thunderbolts are set to follow Captain America: Brave New World, scheduled for release in February 2025, which focuses on Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson in his first solo adventure since becoming Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
In the context of Marvel’s creative retooling, Thunderbolts’ potential departure from the suicide mission plot is discussed, emphasizing the ongoing transformation within Marvel Studios without necessarily constituting a full reboot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is anticipated to continue generating buzz and excitement among fans, especially considering its connection to the broader Marvel narrative following Captain America: Brave New World.
