To prevent copying Avengers: Endgame, Marvel changed Ant-Man 3’s ending

Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” was released to mixed reviews from fans and critics. One particular point of contention was the film’s ending, which saw the main characters Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne escape the Quantum Realm and have a happy ending. However, according to writer Jeff Loveness, the original ending had the characters stuck in the Quantum Realm, just like the end of the previous “Ant-Man” movie.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Loveness revealed that the original ending was removed to avoid comparisons and similarities to “Avengers: Endgame.” The two films both heavily feature the Quantum Realm, and Loveness felt that having Scott and Hope stuck in the Quantum Realm again would be copying a beat from the previous “Ant-Man” movie and “Endgame.”

Loveness explained that there weren’t many other ways to take the story that would have been different from “Endgame,” and having the characters escape the Quantum Realm again would make the movies too similar. He stated that there were discussions about having Scott and Hope stuck in the Quantum Realm, but it would have been repetitive and unsatisfying.

The writer also spoke with Variety and Gizmondo about the movie’s ending, stating that it was cooler to have a worry-free character like Scott end his story on a high note. He compared it to Frodo in “Lord of the Rings,” saying that Scott had his adventure but was not the same guy anymore. Loveness also explained that having Scott, who saved the universe in the previous “Avengers” movie, accidentally be the one who screws up the Multiverse in this phase would be a compelling storyline for the future.

Ultimately, Marvel Studios decided to change the ending of “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” to ensure that it did not repeat a story beat from the previous movie or “Endgame.” Reshoots were conducted only a month before the film’s release to achieve the desired effect. While fans may have had some complaints about the movie’s ending, it seems that Marvel Studios made the right choice by avoiding comparisons and ensuring that the story was fresh and engaging.
