The theatrical debut of Venom: The Last Dance is highly anticipated, promising to deliver an epic new chapter in the saga of Eddie Brock/Venom, portrayed by Tom Hardy. Since 2018, Hardy’s performance has captivated fans across the globe, spanning two solo films and various post-credit appearances. Despite Hardy’s statements that The Last Dance will be his final solo film as the character, speculation abounds regarding his onscreen future, both within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and potentially crossing over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One prevailing theory revolves around his connection to the film’s villain, Knull, a primordial cosmic being with significant impact across the Marvel Universe.
Knull, created by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman, is known as the “King in Black,” having domain over all symbiotes in the galaxy. He became the central antagonist of the King in Black comic crossover, where nearly the entire Marvel Universe united to combat him. The Last Dance has hinted at Knull’s onscreen debut as the first chapter in a larger story, leading some to wonder if the character will evolve into a significant onscreen villain. However, an intriguing possibility is Eddie Brock taking Knull’s place as the King in Black. This doesn’t necessarily mean Eddie would become a new version of Knull, but rather, he could succeed Knull in this role, as seen in the comics where Eddie kills Knull and assumes control over the symbiotes.
Transforming Hardy’s Eddie into the King in Black would be a clever full-circle choice, given his tumultuous journey with Venom. It would also position him as a franchise-spanning antagonist, akin to the MCU’s casting of Doctor Doom. Such a transformation would be a draw for a big crossover movie, especially if characters from other Sony Spider-Man films joined forces to battle a super-powerful Venom. Hardy’s Venom has become beloved for its wacky and maximalist nature and seeing him evolve into a cosmic deity would be a fitting continuation of this trend. Venom: The Last Dance, set to be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, October 25th, holds the potential to explore these exciting narrative possibilities.
