What If…? first looks at Season 3 show off Sam Wilson’s animated debut

The first pictures from Marvel Studios’ What If…? Season 3 have been revealed. In order to express gratitude to viewers for “watching season 2 of #WhatIf and joining us on this journey across time…space…reality,” the studio posted the pictures on X. We’re thrilled to provide this first glimpse of some of the countless scenarios we’ll investigate in What If season 3 with you. The four photographs appear to be from two different episodes, though it’s hard to say for sure. The first two appear to be teasers for an episode where Monica Rambeau as Spectrum and Sam Wilson as Captain America don monster combat outfits reminiscent of those from Pacific Rim, while the last two appear to be from the newly leaked episode where Bill Foster, Red Guardian, and the Winter Soldier appear.

The fan base has taken notice of Sam Wilson’s omission from What If…?, with many asking why the character wasn’t included in Steve Rogers’ gang of outlaws in the Season 2 episode “What If… the Avengers Assembled in 1602?” Sam Wilson was not initially permitted to appear in What If…? as the character had not yet been established as Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier at the time the scripts were created, according to a new explanation from former head writer A.C. Bradley. “We also couldn’t do Sam Wilson’s Captain America because, we didn’t know when that would be coming out,” Bradley said. Once more, while we were writing Season 2, filming for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was halted, and the scripts had to be revised due to unforeseen circumstances. When anything will broadcast is unknown. Because we’re not authorised to introduce it, we were unable to touch it. It makes sense to let the character to develop in live-action before allowing them to participate in other realities.”
