The focus is now on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third installment in the franchise, which will carry on Miles Morales’s wall-crawling exploits as he tries to prevent Spot from destroying the multiverse. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was a critical and financial success. 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse marked the beginning of a new cinematic journey for Spider-Man, departing from the well-known version of Peter Parker’s origin tale. Miles Morales, a youthful Spider-Man who teams up with several other Spider-People from different dimensions to defeat the Kingpin, was the main character of the Oscar-winning animated movie. The universal coming-of-age themes of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, together with a superb hip-hop soundtrack and a gifted voice cast, guaranteed the film’s almost unanimously good reception. Across the Spider-Verse did the same. Even though character variations and multiversal crossovers are already common in superhero media, the Spider-Verse franchise stands out in the market thanks to its stunning artwork and countless Spider-Man cameos. Although Beyond the Spider-Verse will mark the conclusion of Sony’s animated trilogy, it could not be the last for Miles, Gwen, and the others.
In addition to discussing the production delays, Bryan Tyree Henry, who plays Miles Morales’ father, gave a little preview of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s emotional payoff, which may include some very moving scenes. Here is what he said:
…It takes time, but we got to make you wait a little bit. You know what I mean? But it’s coming. It’s coming. There’s not going to be a dry eye in the house. I’ll tell you that. Good luck. It’s not going to wrap up in a nice little bow what things do.
Miles’ inability to just let his father die because it is a canon occurrence serves as the motivation for his actions in the latter part of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, laying the groundwork for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and its potential emotional payoff. This will probably be the film’s central theme, and considering Bryan Tyree Henry’s remarks, it may be devastating. It was finally revealed who will be directing the last film in the adored Spider-Verse trilogy, despite the fact that there have been little updates on the film’s real fate. The official Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse account just announced in an X post that series veterans Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson will be leading the final installment of the Spider-Verse trilogy, which began with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018.
There isn’t a release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse yet. Upon its announcement in 2021, Beyond the Spider-Verse was scheduled for release on March 29, 2024, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Sony, however, said in July 2023 that Beyond the Spider-Verse will no longer be released by the company. Depending on how long the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes lasted, the studio was reportedly exploring a variety of different release dates at the time. However, since both strikes were settled, no update has been given. The announcement made by Karen Soni in August 2024 that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is “deep in production” raises the possibility of a 2026 release. It would be understandable, though, if Beyond The Spider-Verse still took a long time to complete and be ready for release, considering the amount of effort required to create the Spider-Verse on an animation level. Given the diverse range of artistic forms that the Spider-Verse and its characters are composed of, this is especially relevant because it is quite likely that the finished film will include even more disparate realms and styles. A lengthier production time appears to be advantageous for the trilogy’s conclusion in the long term by guaranteeing that the third film can meet the high standards set by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. It’s unclear how long the production process will take for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse because it arguably needs to be the most complex film in the trilogy in order to give the story a fitting ending and give the final chapter all the action and excitement that has been built up for the finale.
Behind the scenes, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be directed by Bob Persichetti, co-director of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Justin K. Thompson, co-director of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and production designer of Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse. The three will continue to rely on Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, producers of the Spider-Verse franchise, to co-write the script alongside Shang-Chi and David Callahan, the author of the Legend of the Ten Rings. Lord and Miller said in 2021 that they decided to split the tale into two sequels because they had too many ideas for a single film. Spider-Man franchise producers Christina Steinberg, Amy Pascal, and Avi Arad will reunite with the pair. Although the third episode is still essentially one continuous adventure, it was originally titled “Across the Spider-Verse Part Two” before being renamed Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Notably, The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse was published as an 8-minute spinoff tie-in between the release of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse and the premiere of Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse. However, the installment does not fill the narrative gap between the two; rather, it is a short that elaborates on Miles’ challenges in collaborations with organizations that aim to increase awareness of mental health. Spider-Man film producer Amy Pascal has provided some more insight into the Spider-Man movie timeline. In an interview with Variety, Pascal affirmed that Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be the series’ next top releases, ahead of the potential live-action Miles Morales film that has been hinted to as being “in the works.”
Given the cliffhanger conclusion of Across the Spider-Verse, it is anticipated that the rest of the Spider-Verse primary cast will also be returning, with Shameik Moore slated to return for voice work as Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse continues to center on Miles Morales. The newly formed Spider-team, which includes Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), and Spider-Byte (Amandla Stenberg), will be heavily featured in the trilogy finale, along with Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Woman and Jake Johnson’s Peter B. Parker. The same is true of Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), Spot (Jason Schwartzman), and a variation of Aaron Davis (Mahershala Ali), who is now Miles’s adversary. Both Luna Lauren Vélez and Brian Tyree Henry will undoubtedly be heard as the hero’s parents in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, given the strong family-centric elements that pervade Miles’s adolescent hero arc. Lastly, the multiversal plot of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse makes it very probable that new characters will show up even as the final chapter of the trilogy starts, even if they just make brief appearances. Even if there were a lot of Spider-People in the first two films, there is always the possibility of adding more, especially since many fans are hoping that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will make an appearance in the last installment of the trilogy.
Although Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s storyline details have not been revealed, the film’s huge cliffhanger conclusion provides a clear indicator of the direction the tale is taking. Because Miles gained abilities he shouldn’t have and created a chain reaction that jeopardizes the interconnected worlds of all spider-people, he finds himself at conflict with the Spider Society in Across the Spider-Verse. Miles is trapped on the hostile, Spider-Man-less Earth 42 after fleeing Spider-Man 2099 in an attempt to alter his father’s destiny. Gwen and her newly assembled team of friends will attempt to save Miles from his own version, who has turned into the Prowler, in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The description of Prowler Miles as a “vigilante” in Spider-Verse concept art and unreleased Spider-Verse test footage showing the variant Miles and his Uncle Aaron stealing medical supplies to aid others, however, suggest that Spider-Man is more likely to work with the seemingly well-meaning pair and win them over after their initial tense encounter. Given that all of this will go place as Miguel O’Hara works to maintain the multiversal canon and Spot continues to develop into a genuinely dangerous multiversal traveler, it goes without saying that Miles will require other friends.
