Whether he is alive or dead, Robert Downey Jr. won’t allow any film to feature an AI clone of him: “I Intend to sue all future executives”

Even after he’s gone, Robert Downey Jr. has promised to sue anyone who attempts AI because he won’t let it take his place. Hollywood keeps experimenting with AI as the cutting-edge technology develops and gains sturdiness. Actors, directors, and writers have voiced concerns about the use of AI by studios, arguing that it poses a danger to creativity in the entertainment sector. The most recent actor to voice his opinions is Downey Jr., who spent 11 years as Iron Man in the MCU. He has a sobering critique for Hollywood. Downey Jr., who most recently won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2023’s Oppenheimer, is one of the most well-known and successful actors in the film industry. In a recent interview with the On With Kara Swisher podcast, Swisher informed the actor that once he passes away, “future executives” will attempt to replicate his likeness using artificial intelligence. These executives are cautioned by Downey Jr. that his legal team will continue to be very aggressive.

Well, you’re right. I would like to here state that I intend to sue all future executives just on spec…after death my law firm will still be very active.

Though not in the role of Tony Stark, Downey Jr. is making a comeback to the MCU. In Avengers: Doomsday, he will reprise his role as Doctor Doom, the Avengers’ next major adversary. Many still speculate, though, that he could one day reappear as Tony, either as a version from another reality or in a flashback. An AI replication of Tony is not a possibility, and it should not be, therefore if he does return as Iron Man, it must be while he is still alive. Although Downey Jr. is aware that executives could consider re-creating his image as Tony Stark, he is not concerned about Marvel doing so.

“To go back to the MCU, I am not worried about them hijacking my character’s soul because there’s like three or four guys and gals who make all the decisions there anyway, and they would never do that to me, with or without me.

According to Downey Jr.’s remarks, he has faith in the company and its executives and isn’t worried about Marvel making this callous decision. Since he wouldn’t have returned if he didn’t believe he would be treated with dignity, this friendship probably contributed to his return as Doctor Doom. Many actors want to work with Marvel, and they probably wouldn’t want to mimic Tony Stark if they didn’t try to duplicate Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa. Hollywood is starting to worry a lot about AI. Seeing a deceased actor brought back to life using deepfake technology has not avoided the uncanny valley effect, even though many studios do obtain consent from the actors’ families to replicate their likenesses. Christopher Reeve in The Flash, for instance, looked clumsy, and the effects destroyed any kind of homage the film aimed to pay to the actor. The same is true of Ian Holm, whose image was utilized in Alien: Romulus to revive Rook.
