Amy Rardin, co-headwriter of Echo, provides a convincing justification for why Maya Lopez’s abilities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe diverge from those in the comics. Following a common trend with MCU characters, Rardin asserts in an interview that Maya’s powers are more closely related to her emotional development and tale than to how she is portrayed in Marvel Comics. In order to guarantee that Maya connected more strongly with viewers, Rardin felt it was crucial to include an emotional component. “I believe we discussed departing from the comics quite a bit a lot. I am aware that her powers are undoubtedly the most prominent feature. We discussed her powers extensively in the room and finally decided on a plot that connected her powers to her emotional development and tale. That’s a major area where we strayed from the comics, in my opinion,” she remarked.
Echo centres on Maya leaving behind the events of Hawkeye and her evil deeds as a member of Wilson Fisk’s Tracksuit Mafia in favour of returning to her Oklahoman homeland and reestablishing her connection to her Native American heritage and family.Through visions of her ancestors and the abilities/strengths they exhibited in previous lifetimes, Maya in the Marvel Cinematic Universe connects with her Choctaw lineage. Eventually, she discovers that her ancestors are “echoing” to her.She also has the capacity to easily render her opponents helpless by conjuring up a luminous force in her palm. This is a significant departure from the comics, where Echo mimics any superhero’s combat technique and uses it to her advantage.Rardin claims that in addition to giving Maya greater fearlessness, her MCU abilities also enable her to experience emotional growth. She stated, “I think Maya can’t fully come into her power until she has that moment with her mother and heals her heart a little bit. It’s very much tied into her making peace with her past and moving forward emotionally.”
The most recent example of a current trend for Marvel heroes is the reversal of Maya’s powers in the MCU. The powers of Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) were altered from the comics for the MCU, and two characters who appeared in The Marvels were treated similarly. In the comics, Ms. Marvel gained her Inhuman abilities through contact with the Terrigen Mists. But in the MCU, Ms. Marvel was made fun of for being a mutant in the Ms. Marvel series, and instead, she got her powers from a mysterious bracelet connected to her family. Monica, meantime, modified her power source from the comics, which originated from extradimensional energy, by accessing the Hex, an other world, in WandaVision to get her MCU powers. Audiences and critics have been giving Echo positive reviews despite Maya’s change in abilities. Despite having one of the lowest Rotten Tomatoes critical scores of any MCU programme ever, Echo has won accolades for its depictions of Native Americans, action scenes, and character development. Disney+ and Hulu have seen a surge in viewing for the Hawkeye spinoff.
