Why Steve Rogers was replaced as Captain America in the MCU

The subject of why Steve Rogers was supplanted as the MCU’s Captain America has gained fresh life with the release of Captain America: Brave fresh World. Since his debut in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve Rogers has been inextricably associated with the Captain America role. After seeing Steve Rogers’ long list of virtues, Dr. Abraham Erskine chose him as the best candidate to receive his perfected super soldier serum, establishing the traits that were thought to be required to fulfill the initially symbolic position. The once little Rogers was able to biologically match other strong superheroes after obtaining the super soldier serum through a procedure known as Project Rebirth. Nevertheless, Steve Rogers’ moral character has always been what made him the most adored Avengers captain. He would go on to lead this legendary squad and “do what’s right” until 2019 when Steve Rogers handed the mantle and his recognizable vibranium shield to Sam Wilson, another veteran of the military who devoted a significant portion of his post-deployment life to helping PTSD-affected soldiers.

The selflessness of Steve Rogers, who frequently made the “sacrifice play” throughout his time in the MCU, is one of his primary traits. It culminated in Avengers: Endgame with Steve Rogers refusing to back down from a futile battle with Thanos and his legions before assistance would come in the shape of a superhuman army. This has seen Steve risk his life several times, frequently when confronted with overwhelming odds. After their triumph, Steve would have to restore timelines by moving the Infinity Stones back to their proper locations in time by himself. After almost ten years of exhibiting his altruism, Steve Rogers would ultimately decide to use the Avengers’ time travel powers to do something for himself: return to the 1940s and lead a peaceful and contented life with Peggy Carter. Rogers would resurface in the present day as an elderly man shortly after being sent back in time, revealing that he had been living in silence with Peggy for decades prior to that. By leaving his shield and mantle to Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers effectively retired from his heroic duty.

Steve Rogers never lost sight of the significance of Captain America as a symbol, and he knew that even after his tragic decision, the world would still require Captain America. This symbolism is best illustrated by his choice to appoint Sam Wilson as the new Captain America. His rejection of Bucky Barnes as his successor shows how important Captain America is as a champion of particular ideals rather than just a superhero capable of competing with supervillains. Steve thought Sam Wilson embodied these ideals.

His troubled past has helped to turn Bucky into a more reclusive figure, which isn’t conducive to leading the Avengers.

In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson is presented as a soldier who works as a PTSD counselor for other veterans. Wilson is a compassionate leader whose primary objective in this capacity is to support and bring people together who are in need. Sam Wilson is the ideal person to take on the Captain America mantle and all of its meaning since he is a soldier and a public superhero who has battled to defend others. Bucky Barnes is far less prepared to assume such a noble position, even if he has also demonstrated gallantry after completing his Winter Soldier training. He is less suited to the broader ramifications of the Captain America mantle, even though his dubious past—however unintentional—may harm his reputation as a legendary superhero in the future. Bucky has become more withdrawn as a result of his difficult history, which is detrimental to his leadership of the Avengers. Bucky is far more suited to his new Thunderbolts* duty, as he continues to defend the poor in a more covert manner.

In his debut motion picture role as the new Captain America, Captain America: Brave New World, Sam Wilson experimented with the notion of starting a new Avengers organization. As the MCU continues to focus on his successor, this appears to draw a more definitive line underneath Chris Evans’ tenure as Captain America, regardless of the upcoming box office numbers for Captain America: Brave New World. However, in a 2023 interview with GQ, Chris Evans indicated that he would like to return to the position, saying:

“I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing. So, no time soon. And ultimately I really hope to just maybe act a little bit less in my life.”

Taking Chris Evans at face value would imply that there are no intentions to have him reprise his role as Steve Rogers, but it’s not like MCU stars’ pronouncements are often the most reliable. For example, in the run-up to the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield denied reports that he would be appearing in the film on several occasions. This suggests that Chris Evans might yet play Captain America again in one of the Multiverse Saga’s final films. But until there is formal confirmation, this is all conjecture.
