With an infamous Marvel Cinematic Universe record at the box office, The Marvels officially finishes its run in other countries as the superhero movie fails to generate much attention. Records show that the Captain Marvel sequel ended with a $205.8 million global box office haul, falling short of its $275 million budget. Consequently, The Marvels has officially surpassed the previous record established by 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, which brought in $264.8 million, to become the lowest-earning MCU big-screen film ever. Just $84.5 million of The Marvels’ total worldwide receipts came from North American theatres; the remaining $121.3 million came from other markets. What was predicted in reports from last December is supported by the most recent box office update. Less than a month after its release, Disney ceased providing weekly box office data for The Marvels, as the movie deviated even more from the top of the charts following its opening weekend, which also produced the lowest return for an MCU picture ever. The amount is significantly less than what Captain Marvel made upon its 2019 release, when the first movie brought in over $1.13 billion at the global box office.

The Marvels’ notorious box office performance coincides with favourable but unimpressive assessments from reviewers and encouraging comments from fans online. The Marvels has an 83% audience score and a 62% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many people have praised the sequel and said it wasn’t deserved of its poor box office performance. The Marvels’ box office failure has been attributed to a variety of factors, including cynical ones like the film’s female lead role and developing superhero weariness, which is demonstrated by Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s financial difficulties and every 2023 DC Extended Universe release. The Marvels had a number of problems even before it debuted on the big screen. When Marvel president Kevin Feige was not thrilled with the first cut of the film, the film underwent a precarious reshoot and received unimpressive test screening evaluations. Furthermore, during post-production, director Nia DaCosta departed to collaborate on Hedda, a movie starring Tessa Thompson from the Thor franchise. DaCosta was even left out of a celebration viewing for the film’s premiere with the cast and crew.

Brie Larson plays Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in The Marvels, Teyonah Parris plays Monica Rambeau, an astronaut for S.A.B.E.R., and Iman Vellani plays Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. As the sole film from the cinematic universe to be released in 2024, Deadpool 3 will be crucial to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s much-needed boost. During the protracted SAG-AFTRA strike last year, a large portion of the MCU schedule was rearranged.
