Jonay Bacallado’s concept art for Deadpool and Wolverine features Zenpool in the lead role. In keeping with this, Cowboypool occupied a prominent position in a concept picture featuring Deadpool and Wolverine. The first two slides, which Bacallado posted to Instagram, show Zenpool standing on a rock with glowing eyes. On the last slide, though, Zenpool can be seen with his black eyes between Deadpool and Nicepool. Bacallado declared, “Zenpool is one of the many variants we worked on that made it to the film,” in the description of the upload. It’s the only version whose outfit virtually entirely lacks red. We envisioned him as a Tibetan monk, a martial arts expert, and a serene, flowing person.”
“He represents all opposite things the original Deadpool is about,” Bacallado continued. Mayes Rubeo, the costume designer, intended to show him mid-practicing.”
“We wanted him to have a sense of calmness, fluidity, martial arts master and Tibetan monk. He represents all opposite things the OG Deadpool is about.”
Previously, Marvel Studios Director of Visual Development Andy Park’s concept art for Deadpool & Wolverine featured a character he dubbed “Rob-pool.” Park said this was him “honoring his original boss & creator of Deadpool in Rob Liefeld,” adding, “We played with fun variations of Deadpool’s costume for a fun sequence during preproduction.” In order to recreate these variations, I had to experiment with famous Liefeld elements like his original costume’s color breakups, exaggerated musculature, pouches, swords, shoulder pads, and unique eye shapes. What fun! Rob, thanks.
Focusing on Deadpool and Wolverine, actor Ryan Reynolds explored why no other character in the project will break the fourth wall in June. He claimed that if everyone in the movie was “also aware of the fourth wall or any kind of meta aspect,” the stakes in the movie would be diminished. He continued, saying that “Deadpool is the only character who has that ability to do that.” You wouldn’t be as invested in that persona if everyone did it.” Before revealing any of these details, Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy discussed his desire for legendary Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman to don a comic-accurate outfit for the Merc With a Mouth in the film’s upcoming 2023 release. Curiosityfully, Jackman was instructed by Marvel Studios President and CCO Kevin Feige not to reprise his Wolverine role because to Logan’s resolution.
